The tower was named in 1930 after Louis Zimmer, who built a  \nJubilee Bell in place. At the stroke of midnight, the years appear  \n1830-1930, the Belgian coat of arms, the three first kings, the Lierse\n  coat of arms and the six mayors who governed Lier since the  \nindependence of Belgium: a true spectacle! <strong>Visit www.visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitlier.be\/zien\/musea\/zimmermuseum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lier.be<\/a> for more info.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#2 Beguinage  <\/h2>\n\n<p>The beguinage in Lier originated in 1258 and has since been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a typical <strong>13th-century street beguinage<\/strong> with 11 streets and 162 cottages. All the cottages bear a name. Centrally located you will find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitlier.be\/zien\/kerken\/sint-margarita\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St. Margarita Church<\/a> (17th-18th century).  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#3 St. Gummarus Church<\/h2>\n\n<p><strong>St. Gummarus Tower<\/strong> is 83 m high and is popularly called &#8220;<strong>Peperbus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Due to multiple disasters, construction took nearly four centuries. This is  \nevident in the different architectural styles: gothic at the bottom,  \nThe octagon resting on it is late Gothic; the upper octagon is  \nlate Baroque and the tower cladding is Rococo.<\/p>\n\n<p>Upstairs is a unique 18th-century <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitlier.be\/fr\/zien\/erfgoed\/beiaardcultuur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carillon<\/a>.\n  On the occasion of its 300th anniversary, a  \nthorough restoration performed on the bells, the playing drum and the  \ntimepiece.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#4 Spuihuis<\/h2>\n\n<p>The <strong>Spui<\/strong> or <strong>Groot Spui<\/strong>, the former <strong>sash house<\/strong> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitlier.be\/zien\/natuur\/de-nete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Binnennete<\/a>, is the only remaining building of the <strong>second city wall.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>After excavating a connection between the <strong>Grote<\/strong> and <strong>Kleine Nete<\/strong> rivers in 1426, Antoon Keldermans built the Groot Spui in 1508-1516. There will be two locks, the Large Spui and the Small Spui. Now only the Grand Spui remains.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#5 The Vests<\/h2>\n\n<p>The <strong>city charter<\/strong> or <strong>vest<\/strong> is a <strong>5-km-long<\/strong> green belt around downtown.<\/p>\n\n<p>The name &#8220;vesten&#8221; refers to the original <strong>rampart<\/strong>, the<strong> second city wall<\/strong> from the first half of the 15th century.  <\/p>\n\n<p>From about 1850, the defensive belt gradually became  \nLeveled and planted. The vests house a large number of  \nvaluable trees such as green and red beech, Japanese pagoda tree, oak,  \nlinden and sycamore.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#6 Grand Place &amp; City Hall<\/h2>\n\n<p>The<strong> Grote Markt<\/strong> has been the <strong>beating heart of Lier<\/strong> since the Middle Ages,\n  which was granted city rights in 1212. For centuries she has been the backdrop of  \nsmall and large events, markets, processions, processions,  \nevents and high attendance. The triangular shape is thought to be on the Frankish  \norigin point.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#7 Felix Timmermans Square<\/h2>\n\n<p>On this  \ncozy sitting quay you will find several attractions, such as the  \nBuyldrager cottage, the Fortune and the cozy terrace of caf\u00e9  \nSt. Gummarus.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#8 Fish Market<\/h2>\n\n<p>Once, twice, &#8230; sold! Fresh fish used to be brought in across the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitlier.be\/zien\/natuur\/de-nete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nete<\/a> River in the typical <strong>flat barges<\/strong> and sold at the <strong>Vismarkt<\/strong>. The custom of selling the fish by bidding was first by auction, then by auction. On the <strong>Fish Market<\/strong> is one of the old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitlier.be\/zien\/interessante-locaties\/stadspompen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">city pumps<\/a> (1835).<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#9 Prisoner&#8217;s Gate  <\/h2>\n\n<p>The <strong>Prison Gate<\/strong> was erected in 1375 as part of the first city walls. This gate is the only remaining part of the oldest <strong>defensive wall<\/strong> with <strong>5 interior gates.<\/strong> From the 16th century until 1930, the gate served as a <strong>prison<\/strong>, hence its current name.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#10 Zimmer Square<\/h2>\n\n<p>On the  \nZimmer Square is a blissful place to hang out after a nice stroll around town for some\n  drinking.
